Michèle Ducray – Psycho

Oh my word, Michèle Ducray is surely bonkers? I LOVE her! What a wondrously dark, out there single this is!

‘Psycho’ describes someone who’s sick of the world’s restrictions and doesn’t really care anymore,” explains Michèle. “It’s based on self-expression; we’re all on this giant rock heading into oblivion, so who cares – just be your most authentic self! It’s the kind of track that makes you want to get up and dance away your inhibitions. Where cirque-du-freak, meets a nihilistic point of view.”

Putting me in mind of the B-52s with a touch of Scissor Sisters commercial sass, this lady has created her own visual vibe highlighted gloriously OTT in the video to this single, based around a rather nice swimming pool. Pop onto YouTube and give it a click. Wonderfully eccentric. And she has the EYES for it!

“My character is on a ‘date’ with a ‘creature’… she leads him on throughout the video, playing little jokes on him throughout the video,” says Michèle. “It’s a game of cat-and-mouse, with the protagonist having a lot of fun on her vacation at the ‘mansion’.”

The song is actually really well-written, orchestrated and recorded. It perfectly captures the off-the-wall quirkiness of the lyrics and melody. It’s at home in the club, at a rave, in the headphones, in the car. A real bouncer, and barking mad in the most enjoyably wacky way, without caricaturising the performer, the song, or any part of this. Very cool. Very 2023, and very compelling.

Eleven out of ten, and I cannot wait for more!
