Nova – See You Dancing

Yay! I get another Nova single to review. Eliza and Bryn have followed up Temple with an absolute belter. See You Dancing is about, in the bands words “coming into a grounded, confident version of yourself and allowing that to be expressed through movement and sharing the dancefloor through the night with people who have the same desire. We wanted this song to highlight the essence of letting go, even if its just for one night, and putting worries to the side for later. This track has a slight darkness to it, an edge that hasn’t yet showed through our other tracks.”

It’s a lively yet very much after dark song that puts one in mind of the easy vibe of Jamiroquai, yet this has layers of more complex jazz-pop like Shakatak and Matt Bianco (both 80s staples of the genre), and I love the Nile Rodgers infused jangly rhythm guitar added to the clever, flowing mix.

This is definitely a pop record made with thought, and a maturity in development of an idea into an end product hitting the mark you aimed it at. I liked their previous single… I love this one.

It’s a full sound, good rhythm section adding the phat to a melody that Eliza delivers as well as any vocalist you care to mention. A great range, really cool and effervescent timbre. Really nothing I can find to fault this track. The compelling atmospherics they manage to build up struck images of Empire Of The Sun‘s debut album, and I found myself wishing I was seeing a promo video to go with such a quality track. I know their representation Lil Sister will get this some airplay, and they deserve it.

Go see them on the 22nd July at the Rogue And Vagabond in Wellington for the EP release party. Treat yourself!
