Oh baby, come to papa!!! This band ROCKS my world!
Six Two’s, the self-proclaimed tallest band in Mount Maunganui (why not? It’s true for all I know!), have delivered a complete punk anthem here with their new single Cuts.
We kick in straight away with a cojones-laden, in your face full band intro. This is how the track intends to run, and it does just that. In your face. I haven’t got any info on the location of the recording, or who engineered and mastered, but whoever it was did a superb job of catching a thudding energy from the rhythm section. Deep, snarly and meaty, this goes a seriously long way to what’s made this song a stand-out. The guitars are not sparkles and jangles, but full throat and dripping with punk-ass distortion. The bass and middle are turned up, and the treble is down.
The tempo is rapid but not head spinning. When vocalist Andy Veysey kicks in, we get a crazy yet working mash-up off Offspring and Nirvana. And the lyrics are great: a representation of the African ethos of UBUNTU. I am because we are. The band explains: “A truism that manifests in both the personal and the collective, but we still get ubiquitous responses – ‘This is not who we are’ after the tragedy, contrasted with the ‘This is who we are’ after success. The desire to take the credit but not the blame. Sorry dudes, that’s not how it works, it cuts both ways!” https://www.newworldencyclopedia.org/entry/Ubuntu_(philosophy)
There’s a lovely middle eight in there, during which I envision a mosh pit still in full flow – meaning despite the change in vibe the tempo and energy remains. This is a really well delivered song hitting home in its genre, and will go over well live in small to large venues. The sound engineer needs to think Gibson not Fender. One for the car on a roadie, and definitely the sound of Kiwi punk. My mate Johnny from Underwire should give these guys a yell. Both bands can benefit from a contact.
Thirteen out of ten.
