Underwire – Falling All Over

RRRRAAAAAARRRRGHHHHH!!!! I absolutely LOVE a well designed, delivered and blisteringly energetic punk rock stomper, and my buddies Underwire have delivered for me again!

Falling All Over is out on the 29th September, and I’ll not steal the thunder of their EPK with too much of the detail on the professionals used to record, mix and master this beaut. I’ll focus on what I just heard – and saw.

There’s a gutsy, bluesy riff delivered by my long time amigo Johnny Mills, accompanied by Spike on the lead and ably anchored by a frenetic yet disciplined rhythm section a la Mark and Steve. Johnny and Jane wrote the song, and what they have given us is just over 2 minutes of a love song delivered in the only way lifelong punk rockers can. Loud, fast, furious, and with a sneer that’s deserved because these guys know they’re good at this.

I got The Buzzcocks in the melody and the tempo. I got The Clash in the choral vocal. I got The Ramones in the bottom end. As ever, this is just to give you some common term of reference for what to expect. A fabulous and entirely unsweetened ball-breaker that means every note.

And then they sent me the video. If I were to say this is a spacey video, I mean it literally! Johnny himself put together an AI assisted animation and while trippy and multi-coloured in a way that could make one reflect on occasions spent following the consumption of questionable fungi, it really, really works with this in-your-face, fast and raucous song. Kudos to the band for putting such a daring visual to this track. It’s another element of the punk ethos. Anarchy!

Underwire are making waves internationally, with radio appearances in the USA and UK, including my native Wales. New Zealand isn’t letting them go unmarked either, so many thanks to Kaos FM down the bottom of the South Island, and to Most FM too. The band has done the hard yards through many incarnations and names, and they’ve earned the right to shout at us all.

If classic punk rock is your thing, you would do well to jump on the bandwagon and click yes to Underwire‘s socials. They have more gigs coming up soon – but I’ll leave it to you to go find them online and they can tell you all about it. Another massive yes from this humble chap!
