Abby Christo – Shouldn’t Be Doing This

Sydney-based Kiwi Country music artist Abby Christo beings us her latest single Shouldn’t Be Doing This. Now, with it having been recorded in Sydney but then produced, mixed and mastered in no less than Nashville, Tennessee itself – this single is literally dripping Country. Afficionados are going to flip for it.

Now, Country is one I can take or leave. When it’s good, it’s good. Abby has captured the very essence of the genre. I can picture this being performed all across those old bars and clubs I first saw watching Clint Eastwood and Clyde the Orangutan frequenting in Ev’ry Which Way But Loose. This is a song that would fill the dance floor of every club in the South or Midwest of the USA.

Warm, well performed guitar work is always the base of a song in this genre. It’s perfectly produced to bring a smile to the lips of the most hardened, sun-baked cowboy. A tear to drip into his whiskey as he thinks of the trail, and the women he’s loved and lost along the way.

This song is about a lady and whether her concern for letting her heart go to a cowboy is going to get her hurt again, while being conflicted due to his gentlemanly, endearing treatment of her. What does she do? The video is filmed out in rural New South Wales, Australia, and is actually in the depths of winter. The small town in the video is called Silverton, and was where Mad Max was originally filmed many moons ago.

Abby brings a vulnerable, warm and full vocal to the song. It’s a classic Country melody, light and varied yet emotive and sentimental. The instrumentation and mix, plus the video visuals, make this a must-see if you are into this scene. My brother-in-law over in Australia will flip for it, I know this. Co-written by Phil Barton and David Thomson, this is a sure-fire Country hit. It’ll be on air in no time, so watch it fly!
