London-based Aucklander Jupita (Julia Morris) brings us Want You Back, the title track for her up-coming debut EP.
Produced by Levi Patel, Justyn Pilbrow and Maude Minnie Morris, this is an indie gem with layered guitars, stadium level drums, and a warm, understated yet effective bottom end. Very much a produced sound, it strays into guitar pop for me, but this isn’t necessarily a bad thing – I did call it an indie gem – as this opens up the eyes of fans of another genre to the possibilities of indie music, which are of course endless.
We have a dream-pop vocal from a very capable singer. Jupita/Julia has written the lyrics herself, and delivered a melody that’s emotive yet disciplined. Really skillful. She’s certainly got the image for this. As the song tells the story of realisation that one is actually still in love with one’s ex – being reminded of that by the attentiveness of one’s current relationship – I like the downplayed vibe of the video. There’s some good facials and a great idea of Jupita’s style, and it’s a simple script of a young woman singing to us about the issue currently tearing at her heart. There are some red shots, some close-ups, and some shots in the props area. It’s a good video, because it adds a visual but doesn’t push a narrative outside of the simple message that love can be an *rsehole sometimes.
This track will definitely find itself airplay on indie stations and student stations around the world, and it should too. It’s not putting a foot wrong, and while not blowing the doors off the world it does span a handful of genres that will appreciate the lyrics, composition and orchestration.
It’s one to listen to while walking with the pods in, or on the morning commute. It’ll actually go down well live too, I reckon. It’s sunny, it’s wistful, it’s whimsical. Follow Jupita‘s socials and watch for her EP release. It’s announced on our home page so pop along and check it out.
