Bird Machine – Closure

I’ve reviewed Bird Machine before, and they were good then. This new single, Closure, marks a definite step up in intensity and production level for the duo from Hamilton. This is an ethereal pop number to remember.

Jenna and Luke have provided us with a dream-pop sound, enriched with layers of instruments balanced to perfection. This is a full-bodied production, with a vocal performance Jenna had to have completed with the knowledge that she’d nailed the living daylights out of it.

I’m not au fait with where and how the production was done, but it’s done well. The engineering has captured the developing sound Bird Machine is crafting. Increasingly complex, and with a gorgeous melody that is emotive, inspiring and highly memorable, this one should be a big hit on the airwaves.

It’s a song for any occasion, frankly. It’s not too slow, yet it’s got a tempo slow enough to stir in the ways the slower numbers alone can. The layered musical instruments add a weave of sound that elevates the overall vibe to an almost Spector-like feel. This is really good.

I’m looking forward to the up-coming EP this track is the forerunner for. The duo took to the streets of Hamilton at twilight for the filming of the promo video for this one. While the odd focus question arose, it doesn’t detract from the gentle melancholy they capture well through Jenna‘s great front-of-camera delivery and the shots they got, echoing an odd emptiness that was in keeping with the bittersweet undercurrent of the whole number.

Bird Machine is growing into their intended stature. Very well done song!
