Cloudy – Raincloud

Kiwi/Austrian singer Cloudy has evolved her sound for her second EP Raincloud. From her solo start, she’s surrounded herself with bass, drums and guitar, and the resulting material is indie/dream-pop of the highest order. I review singles, though, so I am going to focus on the next single, which as it turns out is the eponymously names Raincloud.

Cloudy writes a great lyric, telling stories from her mind’s eye in conversation with her heart and spirit. The mix and master, courtesy of Morgan Allen alternating between Roundhead and Halfwaydown Studios, is exquisite. It’s gentle yet compelling. There’s an early Keane undercurrent to the orchestration, plus I find some Portishead and even an early Everything But The Girl in the mix of instruments and tone.

Now, I know drummer Carl Stieller from many moons ago as he drummed in the first band I signed, Dirty Saint. He’s a capable, no-nonsense player, and will bring a number of layers to the percussion for Cloudy. He can also eat scrambled eggs in volumes no human should be able to. Different story, different time.

Carl, plus guitarist Connor Hurndell and bassist Zel Kust, seem to have an instinctive feel for this sound, because it’s exemplary in its organic vibe, and so-laid-back-it’s-horizontal mood.

An alluring melody delivered in Cloudy‘s deceptively impressive range really fires the visuals. This song, in fact, would reach the stars if it had a promo video for me to talk about too. Get onto it ladies and gents! This is a hit single.

I’d suggest listening to this one while exercising, walking, on the choo choo to and from work. It’s got a lot of options for where you can give it a listen, in fact. Last thing at night, everyone else in bed, the brazen neon lights giving the darkened room an unnatural blue tinge. Turn this on into your headphones. Close your eyes and lose yourself in Cloudy‘s bewitching skills. You’ll not be sorry.
