I was wracking my brain to remember where I saw this lady before. Then I remembered – Kristin Paulse, AKA Kristn, is one half of quality duo Citris iNK, who I have been fortunate enough to review for my buddies Music NZ before.

This single, No Gravity, is another Soul/R n B number dripping with class and sensuality. Kristn has a timbre that takes me straight to Macy Gray or Gabrielle, and provides us with easy going, high quality music in the same vein as those much celebrated artists. Lyrically telling a tale, Kristn says in her EPK:  “My best friend once said to me ‘Yeah opposites attract, but doesn’t always mean that they work.’ That’s the short answer as to what it’s about. We were extremely different people in every way, shape and form. Yet we were also the same star sign, so we were also extremely similar – but it turns out, in the worst possible way. So it ended up being a relationship that was hard to be in, and being with someone that was hard to be in love with, when it was supposed to be so easy.”

We have a really subtle rhythm, countered by a warm but not overpowering bassline. Keys and strings support the contralto vocal wonderfully. The song, following along the plotline to the video, builds with piano and brings in a jazz echo that sent me to the world of one of my musical idols, the great Sade – which, believe me is a compliment from this humble chap.

Speaking of the vid, production company Rogue Anetchinus filmed it in Melbourne. Playing the partner in the “we’re having that talk” interaction is French actor Mohammed el Mota. Kristn, for those who don’t know, has acting and performance chops too, having been in Hairspray the Musical, and is currently touring Australia in TINA – The Tina Turner Musical Australia Tour having toured NZ with the show in 2022.

This is definitely one for the R n B afficionados; if you like to go to the smoother clubs, if you like your coffee black and your music to tell a tale, this is for you. As with her other works, this is outrageously high class music. Another song headed chartwards. Check it out, the vid’s on YouTube. In fact this single has been out for the last four weeks. I need to be more onto it!
