I LOVED this. Eve Kelly, native of Whakatane (apologies for the lack of grammar, my keypad is an old timer!), has been performing since the age of 5, and she’s certainly got a knack for writing great tracks.
This single, Boy, is a whimsical ear-worm of a catchy piano-led pop song. It’s got a gorgeously laid back, sweet melody, with underlying rich bass and a commercially viable beat. Think Lily Allen quirkiness, Jessie J vocal timbre, and a slightly eccentric yet exceptionally catchy tune.
I watched a lyric video that frankly can do for a commercial promo. This song is so simplistic in its execution and the storyline that it doesn’t need more. In fact, with it being about a young woman falling for a cold-calling insurance salesman by his voice alone, a disembodiment of performance and plot visuals really works. Send it to the telly Eve – this is enough to cover this song! Kudos to Shaun Greaves for that.
All the studio work was done in famed Parachute Studios in Auckland. They’ve captured the fun and playfulness in the lyrics, and this song has become a very individual sounding hit in these times. Organic, aimed at making you smile, and excellent.
This doesn’t fit into genre specific pigeonholes, so I’ll just say that if you like dream-pop indie that has a complete lack of plasticity and you can see yourself singing along to it at an outdoor festival – where it will become an anthem if allowed to be (get onto it NZ radio networks!) – you’ll be joined by thousands. There’s some Dah dahs for you to sing along to if you’re not yet familiar with the lyrics. Which are on YouTube. Look now. Eve Kelly – Boy.
Definitely a thumbs up from me.
