Ōtautahi-based but Hawkes Bay and Wellington natives Pool House have hit a home run on the formula that Jacko loves for his indie pop/rock, with new single Another Day. We have some fantastic, well-considered sweet melancholy chords from a rhythm guitar uncluttered with effects, sitting alongside a velvety warm bass and a jaunty, up-tempo drum sequence that turns what could have been a fairly decent ballad into a seriously kick-*ss indie anthem.
Atop the bottom end is a lead guitar with – I think – e-bow (?) giving us a reflective, almost haunting yet smilingly sentimental counter melody to the terrific vocal. Vocalist/rhythm guitarist Will Georgeson has a really great timbre, able to hit soprano, tenor, baritone. The vocal is layered with a fair bit of reverb, and while it’s a lot, actually doesn’t take anything away from the 100% organic feel to the song. Josh Strand at legendary Parachute Studios has done a blinding job on this. Johnny Paul of Daily J added some input here too. Sterling job from all!
And what a beautiful melody and story. “It’s about spending time doing things you enjoy – purely because you love doing them,” explain Pool House. “When writing, we just pictured ourselves having a good time with our friends in the summer sun, and tried to describe what that day looks and feels like.”
The video captures the story well. From the EPK: “It shows someone finding joy in making the most of each day, and that it’s possible to find happiness even in the most random places.” They also say that they had an ‘absolute ball’ with the filming of the video. “We made the trip to Castle Hill, where the bigger-than-life rocks gave way to some awesome shots and fun activities. A couple shots are from the camera being mounted on a bike and also the side of a car. It was cool to see how well these somewhat experimental shots fit the vibe of the video!”
Besides Will, the band consists of bass player Samuel Crisp, lead guitar Harry Van Der Gulik and skin smasher Flynn Fierro. This track absolutely SCREAMS summer hit so the radio needs to get on it. I know the band is in good marketing hands, so we’ll be hearing this song round the traps. If summer indie, with a drip of melancholy undercurrent in a feel-good 3 and a bit minutes is your cup of tea, you need this song on your radar.
They’re playing Rolling Meadows over New Years. The single is on Spotty Fly, the vid is on the Youtubes. This will work when you’re going for a run or at the gym, when you’re driving or commuting. Barbie time, or even at home with friends. This is one I can gush about ad nauseam. I love it – and I am now going to check out the rest of their catalogue.
Yay for good stuff!
