The new single is out from Kirikiriroa’s duo Bird Machine. Luke and Jenna have brought us a multi-genre spanning work that is deeply thought out lyrically and performed with technical precision and hearts on sleeves – as they always do with their writing.
It’s been great to see the duo has been playing some good slots around the place, because they need to be seen. A following for this level of quality across the board is inevitable once it gets on the road for the great and the small to see and hear.
For this track, You’ll Be Fine, we are presented with an Evanescence meets Coldplay orchestration arrangement, I feel. It’s indie but with a slightly Gothic tinge in the vocal, where Jenna‘s opening bars are very Stevie Nicks but then burn hot with a serious classical timbre – but not operatically so. Think the aforementioned Evanescence, or even Ann Wilson from Heart. This is only said for term of reference on what to expect – the voice is Jenna. The instruments are well balanced, and nicely selected.
The melody is gentle but intense, and you do go away with it imprinted. It’s very much a Bird Machine song – memorable tune, great professional mastering, and it could sit in an indie set, folksie set, pop set, or an AOR or Prog Rock set. You can enjoy this one literally anywhere, but I would suggest listening in company somewhere, volume up and a cold one or two popped to get you in the swing of the night.
An unusual lyric/promo video accompanies the release. Luke‘s countenance is taking up the entire screen, immersed in the old H2O. It’s on the You Tubes, and produced by the band themselves. It fits in with the lyrics, oddly. The theme of the song is the uncertainty that dogs us when faced with commitment or walking away, even when we can see the choice is beneficial. Cool subject. Makes ya think, could I have grabbed more opportunities in my life…
Bird Machine is very much on an upward arc. I’m enjoying watching them rising, and stoked they honour me by allowing me to review their work. Another great piece here – and watch for the new EP Hey Human, released on 23rd Feb.
Enjoy!
