Benny Jennings is Hominid, from the glorious capital of New Zealand, Te Whanganui a Tara/Wellington. His debut single, from the forthcoming eponymously titled EP, is Introvert/Extrovert.
Hominid is a disciple of Deep House, dark electronica, and UK IDM. This debut single comes from his appreciation of and willingness to bring new and innovative layers to the genre. This single includes some field recording he carried out at Moa Point using hydrophonic recording to capture some really groovy, quite original underwater ambience that roots the base of the song to the listener. It’s on Spotify, pop on and have a listen to hear what I mean.
We’ve got some surprising dissonance between the segments of the song, in that it’s quite pastoral, almost, in act 1; then leads into quite a mood swing into quite a dystopian mood; settling in act three for a kind of blend of the two. The discordance works pretty well though, so don’t be alarmed. The song is titled Introvert/Extrovert after all, and this is what the feel is as it plays out.
It’s clubland music for sure. Not what I would describe as aimed at a commercial market, you’re going to find this by really going looking. Those labyrinthine warehouse parties you can find if you know where – and how – to look when in Welly. The deepest underground raves. A lot of people will likely be in the process of experiencing various levels of the effects of this scene’s stereotypically considered methods of altering their conscious awareness, so to speak. You know the scene I mean. I’m not criticising. Just painting the picture of where you’re likely to find this being aired.
If this is you, then go seek out Hominid. He employs some interesting techniques married to some traditional beats and loops, and makes for an interesting, highly unique, sound experience. Immerse yourself in it very loudly. Alternatively, headphones, somewhere in solitude, and expect deep meditation to find you easily, and take you on a ride inside your eyelids.
There’s really not much more I can say about this. I don’t have a vid to talk about, nor info on the studio work or staff. This is electronica and deep house of the deepest variety, and is 100% in the alternative set of genres. I hope I’m interesting you enough to give it a listen, because if you are someone who responds to the material my buzzwords have painted the picture of, you most definitely will enjoy this and will keep coming back to it.
