Rockabillies! Wahoo! Boom! Boom! DeLuxe, led by mesmerising frontman DD DeLuxe, brings us a high powered shotgun blast of a song telling us about his lifelong Type 1 Diabetes condition.
With that classic Rockabilly sound, uncompromising rock n roll blended with jazz, a touch of country, and a whole lot of attitude, this is what I like to call one of the Rattlesnake songs I get sent. Bad ass but great. Colourful and rhythmic, but in yo’ face. My initial term of reference was Matt Bianco, combined with the Stray Cats. A wee jazz tilt to the rhythm section, rock n roll all the way elsewhere.
The band, who’s names I would love to get, are highly competent and gel well. The double bass and drums – as seen in the promo vid on the You Tubes – are played by ladies, and what a cohesive pair they are for this band. A great, thick and snarling bottom end. The rest of the instrumentation sits atop the rhythm and is able to extrapolate or tie itself to the beat as it sees fit. Very good workings, and a really neat sound as a result.
I don’t have info on were the recording took place, but I can say that the balance is finely done. We’re mastered well here, nothing is jarring or getting lost. Signs point to a professional job.
Back to the vid. There’s some great performance shots of the band playing to the cameras coupled with some more avant garde imagery, which doesn’t detract from anything but adds to the mirth one gets from them as they perform for the camera. Great lighting, slightly madcap – but that seems to be a perfect fit!
DD the vocalist is a definite frontman/showman, based on the video performance. He’s got the look, he’s got the swagger. He’s also got the voice. Initially coming over very upper baritone rockabilly, he delivers a sonic vocal boom as the track builds towards crescendo stage, and would stand proudly on a stage with anyone you can think to name. No wonder these guys are ding well internationally! With that band, and this singer, this is a really good outfit indeed.
This is a band that would actually go down well in the UK. The live sound I suspect they can deliver, plus also this kind of music has clubs and shows that are specifically celebratory of the genre. Trailblazers like the aforementioned Stray Cats, or Roman Holliday, set a scene there that’s never died down. They are in fact touring Japan in October this year, so if any Japanese supporters are reading this, get onto the band’s website and get ready to be rocked!
This track is on all streaming platforms from 1st June 2024. I do recommend giving this a listen if you’re into the genres or bands I have mentioned. Bands mentioned purely for term of reference, of course; no suggestion that this act is a tribute or copycat.
I’m very much impressed with Sugar by Boom! Boom! DeLuxe. I wish them the best of luck with this release, because it’s genuinely very entertaining. Get among it!
