Robots In Love – Unbreakable

Dunedin power quartet Robots In Love bring us their new single Unbreakable. Oh and don’t these guys rattle Jacko’s cage in all the right ways!

With a thunderous orchestration combining Gothic Rock at its most in-your-face with the melodic sensitivities of the likes of Evanescence, the band tells us what they intend to do with this number. No nonsense, all out attack from the drums and the bass, with some deep, meaty rhythm guitars sit there snarling and punching. Fittingly, and not even remotely an intentional thing (insert Tui ad cliché headline phrase now, New Zealanders), the promo video is set entirely inside a boxing ring! More on that soon.

Atop the beefy rhythm section, we get some classic Goth-style synth strings. Atmospheric and dark, it measures the thundering bottom end and tempers it from turning into a stadium rock number. Well done for that. Vocalist Elenor Rayner simply radiates frontwoman vibes, even in promo vid shots. Her vocal is soprano and delivered with a confidence and evident sense of enjoyment which comes through in the timbre and also her performance in the vid. Always going places when your front is up to the task.

I’ll give the lead guitar play a mention too. It’s nicely restrained until the precise points it’s needed, and when it drops in we’re nicely toned and the composition is thoughtfully hit across the mix. Tonally it sits in perfect harmony with the rest of the track, symbiotic instead of intrusive and foreign. It can go wrong with an incorrectly measured mastering, but not here.

I know Elenor, and drummer Alex Burchell, are producers so I am going to guess this is mixed and mastered by one or both. They’ve done well. This is an absolute anthem, and is going to be received well at any live shows. Check it out on YouTube or Spotify, as it’s out in audio and vid already. I hope we get some spins on the Rock and the like, and the metal shows on the likes of Juice TV and co pick up the entertaining vid. The costume changes alone are great! Not going to give too many spoilers away, so go find it yerself!

The song itself is about the feeling one gets when on stage performing. It’s like a suit of armour, and within it is a sense of being just where you want to be. And how you want to feel. Invincible. Untouchable. Unbreakable.

Robots In Love crosses genres, I know. This track covers Gothic, Industrial, Dark Electronica even. A very strong way for me to be introduced to them. Go Dunners! Great work RIL. That’s short for Robots In Love. Anyway. Check them out!
