Michèle Ducray is back! I adore this performer and her uncompromising individuality.
Michèle is back with Madame, a genuinely sinister yet undeniably poppy and commercially viable synth pop number. Dark and menacing, the melody and demeanour of the artist put me in mind of the spider singing to the fly – and lo and behold suddenly she was singing about being caught on her thread! To me that’s symbolic of a clever blend of visuals and insinuated verbal messaging. Cool.
I am continually entertained when I review this artist. She’s delightfully mad. Not in any hamfisted or uncontrolled way, though. Michèle is able to temper the eccentricities into performance, melody, lyrics and visuals. Speaking of the visuals, the video is simple yet effective. Filmed in a forest, Michèle is dressed as some kind of Faerie shaman woman, not garish or OTT, but subtle and almost primeval. With the great shots, well captured lighting and editing giving us a few variations on the theme, it’s worth a visit to the You Tubes.
It’s dark synth pop, but this isn’t an 80s revivalist like some. Not that that’s a bad thing – I come from the 80s (it’s a PLACE not a time: if you know you know) – but this is able to sit in a pop playlist, it’s something that will get a dancefloor full at a club, an event, or a live show. Vocally her performance is as strong and steady as ever, delivering a bewitching, fey melody over the well balanced mix.
Sharing her own life experiences in the EPK: “This is the story of a philandering traveler that is lured into the trap of a forest-witch, who punishes him for his unruly behaviour,” explains Michèle. “I was in an extremely toxic and abusive relationship, so this song is for anyone who has had experience with cheating partners or straying situations. I want them to feel their strength in this song – to get them dancing and embracing their bad side.” It’s a ballsy move to bare one’s soul, but a heartening message to hear the strength the artist took from it in the end.
I hope Michèle gets a lot of airtime on Juice TV and on commercial and regional radio for this. She’s hit another commercial winner into the stands, and deserves success for her attitude, her talent, and her work ethic. It’s on the Spotify too, so go check out. Go on, go! Go now!
