The ballooning success of Silcrow is reinforced by new single What I Am.
The four-piece based out of Auckland is a growing force in the Aotearoa rock scene with its blend of bluesy rock and the muddy introspection of grunge. Lorenzo, Oscar, Conor and Carl are carefully crafting a sound that’s definitive of the times and an homage to their influences.
What I Am is very atmospheric, driven by some sweetly layered guitars building up the intensity throughout the song. A great timing sequence is used for adding pieces, and this explodes in the choruses. The melody is a saccharine cry from the world of grunge, with a vocal performance by Lorenzo Hazelwood that’s creeping into Cobain territory during the chorus – following a more crystalline delivery in the verses. This is perfect for the overall mood of the song though, and is a seamless transition, not even remotely jarring.
I’ve mentioned previously that I have worked with drummer Carl Steiller in one of my previous industry occupations. He’s an exceptional drummer, dedicated to his chosen tool of trade. He’s gelled with bassist Conor Sutton, and in this mid-tempo anthem they give us a plateful of beefy goodness. It’s full, deep and brooding. The orchestration of the guitars by Oscar Miller sits atop this well. The effects and playing methods used are thoughtfully chosen and work to augment and lift the song even further.
I didn’t get a vid to review this time, but no matter. A great track to complete the promo build-up to the new seven track EP (nice! Released on 7th June with the single), this one is about being authentic and holding true to one’s self-identity. Produced by omnipresent Scott Seabright – which in itself should be an endorsement for a quality studio finish. This is a shoo-in for the Rock, Hauraki, 99bFM and the rest of the non pop-only stations.
This single is worthwhile, so when you get your Spotify going, click on Silcrow and have a listen to all their stuff. When you come to What I Am, remember my review here. Definitely a happening band. See their website for details up up-coming Auckland and Wellington shows in June.
