Courtnay & The Unholy Reverie – Lost At Sea

One of this country’s premier blues guitarists returns with an amazing swamp blues track. Courtnay Low is the driving force behind The Unholy Reverie, and this is a lady who has chops and loves to perform.

Lost At Sea is a dip into deep Southern Blues, I find myself craving a Po’Boy or some blackfish right now. The song showcases Courtnay‘s songwriting and guitar work, but I must make sure not to omit the exceptional vocalist she is. As someone who delivers various entities of Blues, Bluegrass/Blues and Country Blues, the vocal timbre moves effortlessly up and down the Mezzo to high Soprano ranges without a warble or a crack.

The composition is a bittersweet melody, with some head-turning acoustic work to open us up, leading to some lead guitar that meticulously defies being called scale-work as it reaches and catches a melody all its own. I can’t praise the guitar work enough, frankly. Enormous kudos to Tim Lloyd for the slide work straight out of the Bayou.

Anchored with a rich bottom end, from a rhythm section completely in sync, this is going to melt the heart of every Bluesman and Blueswoman who gives it a listen. When something comes along that you know is just dripping with musical professionalism and creative imagination, combined without fear or self-conscious restraint, you’re in for something good.

Go somewhere in solitude. Make sure you have trees, and the sound of running water nearby. Then give this song an airing. The result will be your transportation to another place in another time, down there in Creole country. The smells of the chicken and the fish frying, the sounds of people on the river. A warm, moist breeze. Life chattering, chirruping and chirping around you. Yeah. This takes you there.

Nothing else I want to say about this song, tbh. Courtnay & The Unholy Reverie have a knack of delivering and this joins those ranks with ease. The ‘Naki hits home again.
