Yahaaaaaaaarrrrr! It’s about time someone took us to Mos Eisley and the rough-ass Cantina with its no droids door policy and the most “wretched hive of scum and villainy“. It looks like this band knew to be careful…
Brother Sister brings us a serving of their homage to that mid-80s funk/synth pop stuff that was very much in vogue via the likes of Noo Shooz, Wax, Living In A Box et al. We get some nicely composed keys, brass and that pervasive Nile Rodgers feel to the guitars so synonymous with pop since the days of Chic, EW&F and Odyssey. This is stuff the radio raised me on.
Siblings Dave Thomson (synth & lead vocals), Taz Thomson (bass & lead vocals) and Ben Thomson (drums) make up Brother Sister, and they gel like whanau indeed. Dave‘s baritone raps combined with Taz‘s soprano vocal really spark this number. Furthermore, the mention of Mos Eisley is with regard to the absolutely wonderful video that accompanies this one. Dave Thomson directed and edited it, in fact, so kudos to Dave here.
The various homages to the Cantina scene in Star Wars is not lost on me – including the severed arm bit (“no blasters, no blasters!: shoulda let him buy you that drink)! Hopefully instead of a spoiler, that gives you more of a desire to pop onto You Tube and have a nosie. Trust me – you’ll love it! Costumes (courtesy of Taz), scenery, roleplay, this is a full-on ensemble cast driven mini-movie. A video that has seriously aimed itself at your entertainment core, with more than a little mirth in the mix. I love Steve. If you ever wondered at the offspring of Predator and Cthulhu, check out Steve in this promo vid. Ab Fab.
What’s it about? Let Dave tell you in the EPK: “From a ‘fantasy’ perspective, the song is about getting in a time machine, escaping our struggles and living life like a PG rated sci-fi movie,” explains Dave. “The reality ‘Fantasy’, is about having someone in your life that sees the world in a fantastical way, and how it can affect the relationship and your own mental health.”
The band recorded at their studio and enlisted renowned Ben Malone to polish up the recording. This one is hopefully already seeing Juice TV airing, as the video certainly does the great song justice. Listen to this in company, in the car, at a party, a BBQ, wedding, birthday. You get the idea. Party songs should include this song. Listen to me. I know some stuff.
Check it on Spotify. Brother Sister has hit the 80s revival scene and hit it hard. Get poppin’!
