Ohhhhh what a charming act Turkey The Bird are! This is the spin-off, so to speak, from Bananamundo, and these guys are an absolute delight to listen to.
Folky as all hell, new single Watering Can is how this stuff should be done. With layered banjos being plucked, guitars, warm rhythms and beautifully stacked harmonies, this is a very well crafted song indeed. I can envision this going down so, so well anywhere it gets performed.
In both his bands, André gives out a message of embrace adventure and take that extra step. The EPK tells us to embrace love, freedom and authenticity. Yep, I can get behind that. They’ve given us a great pop song in folk format – a song I dare you to not enjoy wholly. I haven’t got any production and studio info, but it’s been engineered and polished wonderfully.
I love the vocal performance in this song. We have verses blending staccato with harmonies, choruses that demand to be clapped along to, and a deceptively simple orchestration arrangement. Turkey The Bird is not a rookie act by any stretch of the imagination, and it shows here. What a cool tune! Vocally the harmonies sit alongside the likes of Mumford & Sons, more I Will Wait than Little Lion Man; that kind of feel. Very well crafted, well delivered, and right up there with those illustrious English folkies for the performance and professionalism.
I would suggest this would do well on any number of radio stations in NZ, Australia, the USA and Canada. I’d chase up airtime in Ireland and mainland Europe too. I already mentioned it would go down well live, but if you’re listening to it on a playlist it’ll sit well at an event, down the pub as the laughing water flows, at a BBQ, the beach… take your pick.
I loved their previous release. I love this one. Pop onto Spotify and check them out. Turkey The Bird. The single is Watering Can. You’ll love it.
