L.A. Mitchell is Lauren Barus, an Õtautahi-based Kiwi singer and songwriter who is stepping back into the solo world, having collaborated with numerous artists over the last few years. Glove is her new single.
While starting in one vein, the song catches fire as it jumps into an electro-pop vein and gets the head nodding along nicely. With a thought-provoking lyrical theme, ethereal vocals and the dance-friendly beat, this is a definitive Kiwi pop single.
From the EPK: “‘Glove’ weighs up these two themes of ‘I can do anything I set my mind to’ and ‘the spiritual pursuit of purpose’,” says Lauren. “I’m wrestling with the conflict and distance between the two – what if it’s your purpose, but you don’t win at it?”
Co-written with Anna Coddington, Glove was produced and mixed by Mark Perkins, mastered by Brock McFarlane and CPS. A great job done of that too. A minimalistic mood while containing a decent mix of tools, bringing a slightly discordant, challenging and questioning vibe – very well conceived and delivered.
Lauren has a full, clear soprano vocal that can be brought to bear on full throated or more nuanced vocal performance pieces, and she’s representing big time here. Where would I see this one best received? Well, it’s dancy enough to be a fit for RadioActive, RDU, 95bFM, Mai FM, and I might suggest it could fit on the commercial channels like ZM or More FM too to be honest with you. It’s got a certain something.
For the listener? On a commute, in the morning, lost in your own little world. It’s introspective enough, while also bringing the goods to shake you out and get you ready for the day. Listen alone in your room. The lyrical content is compelling enough to enthrall, frankly. Really poetic and demands internal analysis.
Go check out L.A. Mitchell, Glove. She’s back.
