Annemarie Duff, aka T.G. Shand, is definitely an alternative focused artist. This is a good thing. New single Scenes brings us a reflective, winsome little number with a truly delightful video to boot.
With a message that’s essentially a reflection on the development of one’s train of thought while people watching while comfortable sitting a step away from their in’s and out’s, letting the day wash over you as you let the community happenings pass you by and you absorb the urbanity of it all, we get taken on a visual journey courtesy of a clever video animation sequence designed by Spencer Hall. It’s on You Tube so go take a look. And then look a second time. It’s clever, non-threatening, and very lively.
T.G. Shand puts me somewhat in mind of a melodious and less angsty Bjork. There’s shoegaze, electronics, organic performance, a trip into dreampop, and overall a gently downbeat indie mood. Its restful but very engaging. With some gentle guitars, an ethereal vocal mix that puts wings onto Annemarie’s soprano, and a slow build rhythm section that carries the song along, this is the sort of thing to listen to on an afternoon when you have time to let your thoughts wander. When you have some you time.
We’ve all done a bit of people watching. The lyrics, and the vibe of the song, encapsulate the feeling of benign voyeurism and slight detachment from the subjects of your observations perfectly. It was the highlight of the song for me, in fact. Very clever cohesion between melody, tempo, visual, and lyrical content.
It’s definitely got some elements that will get it radio play, so I expect to hear it around the traps. It’ll go well in live performance too, as I feel it has room for some extra interpretations from Annemarie‘s obviously creative and highly original arsenal of ideas.
There’s not too much else I think I want to say about this song. It’s really nice, exceptionally well thought through, and the video has delivered the right kind of imagery to go with it. Really nice work. Check it out if this sounds like your thing.
