Jack Moser – Where You Are

Rising star Jack Moser, Tāmaki Makaurau chap that he is, brings us an ambient, almost psychedelia-infused track called Where You Are.

Driven by gentle keys and a lo-fi intensity rhythm section, this is a pop single with nice commercial sensibilities. Jack Moser has a great voice. You can feel it coming from the bottom of his diaphragm in a rich tenor that’s got the timbre you’d expect to find in anything from blues and soul through to punk and metal. Yep. The word is versatile.

We’ve got a gentle, uplifting melody over the top of Jack’s keys. He’s actually singing to us about recognising the signs of a relationship coming to an end. Says Jack: “I wrote ‘Where You Are’ as my relationship was coming to an end. It was clear from the signs, and I knew it was coming. The lyric “And I wonder where you are” describes the helplessness I had as I saw my partner becoming more distant emotionally, while the lyric “I can sense you’re not that far” displays the hope and optimism I was holding onto.”

The video on You Tube reflects Jack‘s feeling of being an alien in the room, and of being lost in space without an idea of how to get back home to the safe place again. Go check it out. It’s really nicely presented, with good lighting for night-time shots, and some nice portable swing shots.

This is a song to listen to when you’re newly single. It’s not aimed at helping you to feel sorry for yourself: you’ll be doing enough of that. It’s there to be an audio comfort blanket, so to speak. To let you know you’re not the first, and there are plenty of people who hear ya. So, if you’ve just found yourself adrift and unsure following a new break-up give this track a listen.

It does give a surprise ending to us. This is where I found a delve into psychedelia; discordant and frantic, it’s countered by the continued theme of the promo vid, which makes it all the more of a shake-up when it lands on you. It’s good in that it can stop you from starting to wallow, following the bulk of the song being sympathetic to your loss of the relationship. Well planned.

Jack Moser – one to watch. You heard it here.
