I hadn’t listened to Silk Cut before I got the review enquiry for their newly released eponymously named album. Lead single is Turning The Whole World On, and I am not surprised that they chose this one, because it’s bloody brilliant!
Consisting of lead vocalist/guitars/keys player Andrew Thorne, guitarist and BVs purveyor Justin McLean, bass player and fellow BVs exponent Aidan Phillips, and drummer Jayden Lee, Silk Cut is a smooth, sophisticated unit that’s delivered a track destined for global airings. It has to.
We’ve got some Heartbreakers style guitars and rhythm, BVs that would make The Byrds proud, and a catchy, melodic rock track that has hit single written all over it. The multi-layered vocal delivery is special. It’s a real piece of work. With a flowing melody, a chorus having no business being as outrageously earworm-worthy as this, and some desk twiddling that’s made it a warm, cohesive crack of smiles through a cloudy winter’s day, I cannot fault this.
Andrew produced the record, with the engineering by Olly Harmer, AT, Justin from the band and Dylan Storey. It got a mix courtesy of Ben Grant. All this between some home studios, Huntaway Sound and The Lab. As an opening single for the album I have to say this is a belter! Right up my street. The guitars are the right pitch of gentle jangly indie pop, rich enough not to be grating. Bass and drums, nicely unified, are thick and fill out the lower range, allowing for some gentle extrapolation on lead guitar riff and solo pieces. It works really well as a composition piece.
When the vocals get going and those magic BVs drop in, we reach a level of elevation that screams hit single. I will be putting this on my personal Spotify, and it will be heard on my train commute, in the car, and anywhere else. You will enjoy this in the gym, on a run, in your home, at a BBQ, a party, anywhere that the thought of being brings out a smile! This is party rock stuff. You might have guessed I like what I’ve heard!
With Songbroker as a publisher I expect to see these guys getting some great results with their licensing and good on them too. Great intro to Silk Cut for me. I’m sold.
