Dateline – Be Good

Katie Everingham’s Dateline brings us new single Be Good, and man o man this song is an absolute FLEX!

New album It’s All Downhill From Here is out on 5th September on vinyl (yay!) and you can find this track on there when it comes out, for a listen to recorded music as it’s supposed to sound! Meanwhile, we all get to hear it on Spotify already. So what are we listening to here, folks? If you’ll allow me…

This is Dateline Does Country Rock. And they do it more than simply justice. We’ve got a great, commercially viable hook and melody, an earworm chorus, brilliant job twiddling the desk knobs and reading the flashing lights, and a single dripping with positive feels. Jonathan Pearce did the duties of producer/engineer at Vogelhorn Studios, with Oliver Devlin doing the mastering. Excellent jobs all round, I must say.

We’ve got some great guitars that capture the Country Rock sound, but I also suggest we have more here. This is a really alive, organic sounding track, and it spans Country, yes, but I also got a pure Indie vibe, as well as a sense of dream pop. Katie‘s powerful vocal range covers mezzo and soprano here, and she sings from the soles of her feet as ever. The overall feel of the song to me is something like you’d get if you put Sheryl Crow‘s lead tools in front of the rhythm section of Scottish legends Texas. Then add the sass of Alanis Morissette. Finally the tonal sensibilities of grunge icons Four Non Blondes. Can you envision the continuity and seamlessness that blend could produce? Give this track a listen and you’ll see where I’m coming from.

Katie explains the rationale behind the track in the EPK: “I guess ‘Be Good’ is essentially about trying to be the best version of yourself for the person you love. I think the prompt I gave to the band when we were working on the song was to channel their inner Sheryl Crow (HAH! TOLD YA). I wanted the song to have a bit of a 90s country rock feel and I think we got there!

Definitely a song you can go to the gym to, listen to on a road trip, a BBQ or afternoon session in the back garden! This multi-genre spanning track is a shoo-in for airplay from ZM to The Rock. I hope it gets some serious attention overseas – especially across in Aussie, because this sound goes down well over there.

Make a vid Katie! This is a hit all the way!

If you like Indie, Grunge, dream pop, Country Rock, this will be an enjoyable listen for you. Go now! It’s on Spotify. GO! Dateline – Be Good.
