Brian Baker is back, and he’s based in Whanganui these days. Recording, producing, writing and playing, he’s a busy boy indeed – but unlike the new single title, let’s not keep in on the Down Low.
Brian delivers a rich baritone vocal for this track, itself one of those with a melody I like to copy Brandon Flowers and describe as a “bit of a rattlesnake”. It ain’t sweet, it ain’t sad, it ain’t angry – but it’s compelling and slightly sinister yet commercially viable and catchy. It’s on Spotify and YouTube anyway, so go see what I mean.
The video is, as stated, on YouTube, and does the job it needs to do. It delivers the lyrics for you, and contains some light imagery that is timed well and is uncomplicated – how I time and time again say I prefer to see a vid. Just my taste, but it’s my site too so I can say what I like, nyaaah!
We’ve got some bluesy vibes in here too, especially when the lead guitar parts really kick in. Very nicely played, a good tone and effects picked out, and well mixed and mastered by the desk jockey. Kiwi heavyweight bassist Frazer Jones delivers the bottomless well sound of the bass for this one. The mix is completed to sound really organic in Brian‘s home studio. It’s then been sent across the ditch to Benchmark Mastering, with kudos to Don Bartley for the mahi there.
This is a track to listen to at a barbie, or on a road trip. The genre, when the tempo is at this level, really lends itself to that kind of experience. With the baritone, the bluesy feel, a warm afternoon with some barbie kai and a beer is going to send you somewhere chilled. Trust me.
It’s on Spotify and the other platforms, so pop on and give it a go. I expect to see it flying high anywhere close to Whanganui! Enjoy: Down Low by Brian Baker.
