Powder Chutes – Scalpel

Review by Johnny Mills

I’ve been hearing about Powder Chutes for a while, they’ve been making a great name with their live powers, as a tight rocking grungy good time.

Their new single ‘Scalpel’, already anointed by Alien Weaponry as their inaugural AJ Hackett Bungy ‘Thrash More’ winner, opens the throttle wide with a ripple-smash of drums and bass lining you up for the story. It’s a belting tale of the underside of fun, rash behaviour and ‘my addiction to you’, where saying ‘no’ just doesn’t seem to enter into it. Regrets, yeah, a few.

The song roars along, that drum&bass triple shot really nails it home, I got definite Shihad & post-grunge feels (there’s a little QOTSA in everyone), an upper wail I’d like to hear more of threads in to trigger your warning bells, then careens into some able shredding as the back section keeps powering along. Well sung, strong traditional vocal shapes and oh for such young pipes again. Nice, and with plenty of pace and attack.

3m42 flies by in no time, just a sense of a lot of sweat, checking where your everything is, tingly ears and a big grin to show for it. I like it, will definitely look for their next live show.
