Erase Everything – New Year New Idea (Spiritual Slum Remix)

This is different. Erase Everything is a new experience to me, and one I am happy to take onboard.

Based in Tāmaki Makaurau & Ōtepoti the band released the original version of this track on its EP Glass Souls – itself worth a definite listen. I must flag that the EP is VERY different to this re-mix, provided by Melbourne’s Darkwave maestro Paul Bond of Spiritual Slum.

Moving from a rather slick, neat, almost Floyd-esque mix and delivery, we’ve moved into some deeeeeeep studio wizardry. This is a talent in its own right, I must point out. We get, in New Year New Idea‘s re-mix, a hypnotic walk through some sonics sitting atop a percussion that draws you in. In turn it’s married for life to a bass that’s subtle and neat.

Vocally Mr. Bond has taken the band’s chorus line and woven it into the mix as a haunting chant, dripping with delay and reverb (or so it sounds to me). It’s highly effective and despite being the sole vocal until very late on it genuinely works to pull you in and keep you.

As mentioned above, this is a Darkwave re-mix, and the audience type is very specialised in its audio synchronicity. The track will do well in underground venues and sub-groups, and is an absolute soundtrack to many a future night of a number of the genres that lend themselves to the small hours.

Give the EP a listen for context as to the original. Then give this re-mix your time, and you’ll see where it’s gone walkabout in such a daring way. Really cool. Looking forward to more from Erase Everything.
