Planet Hunter – Unholy Union

Motorhead t-shirts? Beastwars t-shirts? A video recorded in a shipping container on vocalist Cormac‘s front lawn? Speaking of vocalists – a vocal performance that sent me down the mental road until I stopped at the late, great Ronnie James Dio. What a set of pipes young Cormac has indeed!

This is an 80s metaller’s dream. The song is a metal guitar-laden, stomper with a huge presence. It’s a mid-tempo number for a metal song, given dramatic effect by the visuals delivered in the uncomplicated video the band has delivered for it. You can see said clip on YouTube, so go there immediately and tell them I sent you.

We’ve got some monster bottom end going on, with pounding drums amplified by a bass that sticks to it like glue. The bass itself is full and resonant. Well mixed and balanced. Guitar parts are raucous and venomous, as they should be. Topping off we have the mayhem incarnate – the incredibly powerful vocal. This is where the 80s metaller’s dream comes in – man this guy has some pipes! And with the way this has been balanced and mixed, it sits atop it all like a melodious Thor shouting at naughty Vikings as he throws out volume. The timbre put me in mind, as mentioned above, of the electric elf himself, the legendary Dio.

The melody is very much in the vein of the heavier end of rock music. I describe this style of tune as a Rattlesnake. It’s not sugary or simpering. In your face and meaning it – as exemplified by Cormac in the vid. It takes a surprising twist in tempo and tone halfway, with a more menacing edge and pumping bottom end. Fun times!

The band is releasing its album Soothsayer with a launch show at Wellington’s legendary Valhalla on Friday 27th February. I won’t be able to get to the show but if you’re in the capital and you like your metal, go on down and you’ll not be sorry. Say hello to Ben, and again tell him Jack sent you.

This is definitely worthy of The Rock, as well as the regional and student stations here in NZ. I’d send it overseas to X in the UK, and to any number of Melbourne stations. They are worthy Wayne, they are worthy! IYKYK
