Another belter from Medusa Glare explodes onto my radar in the form of new single Home. These guys sure know how to put a corker of a hard rock number together, believe me!
We’ve got riffs and rhythm to die for. Kicking right into it with a nasty ass, heavy on the distortion riff, swiftly joined by the drums and bass, we’re left with no illusions as to what’s coming. Vocalist Jase Galu jumps right in with both feet with an almost John Lydon a la Anarchy intro “RIGHT!” The vocal to me is reminiscent of the legendary Uriah Heep – full of immense power and emotion. There’s also a slight Steven Perry timbre there too, never more so than the impressively high range Jase hits with ease.
The vocal is all Jase Galu though – just giving you some term of reference. Married to the rest of the track we’ve got a cutting, monster of a rock track. Absolutely up my street! Simon Koretz‘s guitar work is wonderfully full on and in yo face mamma! The riff is a great tool for the band to anchor behind the rattlesnake melody of the vocal. I do enjoy the vocal snarl line followed by the almost spoken second line. Keep an ear out for that. It adds intrigue to the mix.
The bottom end works wonderfully well together, with the drums thunderous and animalistic, and the bass booming and velcro’d to the rhythm guitar. The guitar solo that comes in on queue is a nice composition of scaling and note picking, well thought through and delivered. Some clever on/off effects pedals add to it but don’t disguise the roots of it. Overall a very well orchestrated, composed and performed track.
It’s been treated well in the studio. With performers of the ilk of messrs Koretz, Galu, Walker and Waters, piloting the desk would be a pleasure for an engineer, I’m certain. I don’t have a vid to review, but the single is out already and already gaining traction globally on radio and online streaming.
Medusa Glare, Waikato rockers extraordinaire. If high tempo, intense heavy rock is you, then Medusa Glare is you as well. Home is a great track to introduce yourself to them. Give it a listen.
