Foley – Going Easy

Aussie based Kiwi pop duo Foley (Ash Wallace and Gabe Everett) are launching their new EP Like An Actress, coinciding with promo single for it Going Easy.

I have to say this band has consistently provided strong, well rounded pop hits to date such as Honey and Cinematic, and Going Easy definitely sits comfortably in the same league as their earlier hits. There’s a playful melody that Ash delivers effortlessly, it feels. She can give us a great range from mezzo to upper soprano and her timbre is light but full, very flexible and able to sit within a whole plethora of genres. Look after that gift Ash!

It’s got some great production lifting up some well-delivered instrumentation. We open percussively with some cool lyrics, and run into a mammoth bassline that sends us into a fluffy cloud of fun. Sorry if that imagery is causing a moment of bewilderment – it’s just light, floaty and not offensive but not cringe in any way.

A slightly Country feel to the guitar works with the warmth of the bottom line. I get a Colbie Caillat vibe from when the guitar is added. The melody flows between verse and chorus, and we’ve got some er-worm potential going on as the BVs crack in as the chorus comes to life. This is a well thought-through pop tune, and it’s going to be a hit.

I don’t have a vid to review for them this time, but no matter. The band explains in the EPK the tale behind the song:

“‘Going Easy’ is easy listening, breezy, flowing – but we’re playing with the person’s feelings a little bit and giving them a bit of a rib. It’s the classic ‘hand out the window – road trip song. But twisted to be even cheekier and more upbeat.  upbeat, fun and even cheeky in some ways.. ” says Foley.

I can confidently predict More FM, The Hits, ZM, The Edge, they will all pick this up and give it some good support. It’ll be a belter at a live show too, plus – as they suggest in the EPK – as a road trip anthem. Foley is becoming a serious name in the pop field, and deservedly so. This is a really well done song all round.
