Jenni Smith – Mirror

Ahhh, Jenni Smith is back with her new single Mirror. This is great for me to review, as I have a lot to say on this track!

This has a deeply organic feel to it, thanks massively to the blend of acoustics, sharply toned pianos and a velvety, good volumed bottom end. Nice work to the knob twiddlers in the twilight world of the producers desk. This work elevates what is already a strong tune though. I shall elaborate…

I’ll kick off with Jenni Smith‘s vocal timbre. The lady has a soprano that rings from the soles of her feet to the tips of her hair. Powerful and rich, and she can swing it through the soprano lexicon, hitting mezzo when needed – but all the while with a richness that makes her performance glide along seemingly effortlessly. The vocalist I find resonance with here is a young Christine McVie – although as always this is for term of reference only, and no suggestion of tributes or copying. Just for context of where I hear Jenni‘s vocal sitting.

Instrumentally we have a really sweet combination of guitars, piano and some great bass. The drums are sitting at a suitable volume, and the whole rhythm section feels like we’re being carried on a smooth wave. It’s got a decent tempo, and whoever has balanced it has done so to perfection. This is acoustic pop done by people who know how.

The melody is an absolute ear worm for the month of March. You’re going to remember this. It’s light, poppy and has juuuuust a teensy element of TayTay – although I think that’s more down to the really clever, heart-on-sleeve lyrics Jenni has produced, which is something Ms. Swift is also adept at. This is a compliment to Jenni‘s magnitude of professionalism and skills with the pen, again not some form of comparison.

The story behind it is always best coming from the artist so, from the EPK:

It all started with her mum, who constantly compared Jenni to famous brunettes like Anne Hathaway, Emma Watson, and Keira Knightley. Jenni never really saw the resemblance, but it got her thinking: if people say we all look alike, what are the chances someone moves on with a new partner who looks suspiciously like their ex? From that observation, “Mirror”was born — a playful, humorous, and relatable track that also quietly explores identity, comparison, and the desire to feel irreplaceable.

I’ve seen da vid. It’s the type I like – not cluttered with unnecessary stuff, and tells a tale. This one is very human. It has humour, recognition and heart. I’ll not add spoilers, just go see it on Juice – it’s being shown TODAY! The single is actually on general release today, and we are going to be hearing it a lot. This kind of song can cross genres, and it’ll be getting air on ZB, The Hits, More FM, the Edge, and all the regionals and student stations too.

The result of a talented songwriter with the chops to deliver the physical side, matched with some professional musicianship, studio work and a nice, humble and feeling video? A hit single, guaranteed. Out on all platforms today, and on Juice this evening. Jenni Smith – Mirror. Stream it. Go on. Go now.
