Zoë Vera – Dizzying

Zoë Vera is a name I’ve recently picked up on. This Netherlands-born, Auckland based singer/songwriter is getting some pretty decent momentum going in her field, and latest single Dizzying is going to help maintain that.

With an almost playful stop/start staccato guitar intro we’re immediately drawn into a melodic, swaying vocal that I have to describe as effervescent. Zoë has a youthful soprano timbre, yet the lyrics give a far more mature, poetic vibe.

When the bass and drums kick in, accompanying Zoë along with some sweet BVs, we’re transported to power pop ballad land. This track is an absolute classy tune with regard to imprinting on your mind. You’ll be humming the tune and find you’ve instantly picked up the chorus after one listen. Try it. See?

It’s an easy melody to get into, and lyrically it’s got a tale we can all relate to at some point in our lives on this silly old rock we all share. From the EPK:

Dizzying’ captures the emotional tension between both wanting and fearing love. A reflection of the courage it takes to open your heart when faced with the thrill of a new, exciting connection, while feeling paralysed by past relationships and unhealed wounds.

“For me, ‘Dizzying’ is about being fearless and open to the thrill of experiencing love again, even though you’re still nursing raw, residual pain. It’s an emotional tug-of-war when you’re feeling swept up in something new, but still wary due to past lessons”, says Zoë.

We have a lyric video for it up on YouTube. Zoë is dressed in a somewhat befuddled suit but looks classy all the same. The backdrop is our largest city, and it does its job of allowing her to tell the tale. Produced by Danny McCrum, there’s a lovely warmth and an odd cheekiness to the instrumentation and composition that I like very much. It gives tangible depth to an already deeply meaningful set of lyrics.

This one will definitely do the rounds for airplay, and deservedly so. A songwriter with this talent should be supported so I expect you all to do as Uncle Jack tells you and get behind it now. It’ll be available on all platforms, and you should give this a listen on a rainy Sunday afternoon as you look out at the world. Alternatively as the night is closing and the neon world is starting to fade outside your bedroom window, sit on the floor with your back against your bed and listen to this through your headphones.

Yeah. That’s where this dreamy number will take you. Enjoy. I did.
