Ooooo now I have just listened to a song that hits me RIGHT in the sweets! Tablefox‘s new single Into Your Eyes is the track and I shall now wax lyrical to convince you of its many merits.
Tablefox is Clinton Bell on vocals and bass, Chris Dickinson on guitar and vocals, Matt Carson on guitars and Henrik Rylev on the drums. The guys have put together a post-Britpop style anthem, dripping with hard rock riffs and thumping bass. For a moment I was transported home to Cool Cymru to the family of commercial hard rock bands that held much of the world in its playful grip. Bands like Stereophonics, Feeder, Catatonia, Super Furry Animals, Manic Street Preachers.
This is term of reference for the family of music only, because Tablefox is its own entity and this is no copycat. A beefy rhythm guitar riff, layered with some chords and really well-chosen phrasing and hits from the lead work are held together by a nice deep and thudding bass, itself twinned with an insistent and pervasive but not invasive drum set. The melody is snarly and what I like to term a Rattlesnake of a song. It’s not a sweet, lovie-dovie vocal. It’s anthemic and rhythmic. Tribal. Your body will gyrate.
The vocals are a tenor, with a timbre that sounds to me like it would flex into a number of other genres. Always useful for a band that appears to be sitting in a genre renowned for its flexibility of the final product. And the story behind the lyrics? As ever, I prefer to let the band tell us, so from the EPK:
“The song explores the idea that no matter how carefully we choose our words, our eyes always tell the truth. At its heart, ‘Into Your Eyes’ reflects the tension between what we say and what we actually feel. Sonically, the song leans into that emotional exposure. There’s a rawness to the delivery, a sense that the walls are coming down in real time.“
I’ve not seen a vid for it, but I hope there’s one on the way before release date on Friday 13th March. This should defo see airplay on The Rock, Hauraki and the regional and student stations. It’ll be a go-to for the live set, as it’s a memorable number for one to sing along to at the right bits. You’ll enjoy this in the gym through your headphones, in the car on a roadie, out for a run, over the speakers at the pub, and live.
Tablefox, Into Your Eyes. Released to all platforms Friday 13th March. If you’re a rock fan, a punk fan, even a pop lover with a touch of cavalier, mark the calendar and give it a listen. Great track. Nice work guys!
