Sunset Tsunami – Fire Got To Blaze, feat. Israel Starr and The Mighty Asterix

I was expecting club with a touch of reggae influence. Nope. This track is pure Reggae, and Reggae gold at that.

Sunset Tsunami, collab of NZ and Sarf London natives Buckwheat and Sideway respectively, have joined forces with Kiwi Reggae heavyweights Israel Starr and The Mighty Asterix, and together they take us not to the dub-driven streets of South Auckland or Peckham, but, to my ear anyway, right to the government chop in Trenchtown, Kingston, Jamaica. As I said above – this track is pure Reggae.

We’ve got the beat, sitting neatly and expressively and not overpowering the vibe with its evident complexity. The whole bottom end feels cheeky and light, in fact. Causing involuntary hip swaying we have the signature staccato hits of the chorus-and-reverb-laden electric guitar’s rhythm chords. Bordering on Reggae’s semi-legitimate offspring Ska – but not so frenetic – the guitar is the epitome of the Caribbean sound.

A jaunty melody led by Israel Starr and his equally high-status buddy The Mighty Asterix, the vocal is more than adequately covered. The tune is memorable, with an ear worm chorus that catches up on you before you know it. It’s actually a track from the Sunset Tsunami debut album Dub Til Dawn called Pass The Rizla (giving something of a clue regarding the content of the message in the lyrics, possibly, to those who know). The vocals have been added for this release which has given it the name change, so happy happies for that because this is an outstanding Reggae number.

I don’t need to go into depth about the message behind it. We have a really laid-back, exceptionally complimentary to its genre release. I would absolutely say this would be a live favourite, as well as a party favourite in many a diverse venue, with many a diverse diaspora of attendees. It’s a great track to get one moving in a non-frantic manner, and to sing along to.

I do hope it’s seeing airplay, as the names alone deserve the time. This is well-produced, well-written and is a smile-inducing number that I defy you not to like. It’s available now, so go give it a whirl. Have a bar of chocolate handy. Trust me.
