John Clarke (RIP) – The Hide And Seeky Bird

From the newly announced re-release of THE UNDERWATERMELON MAN AND OTHER UNREASONABLE RHYMES on 1st November, we’re given the late, great Kiwi comedian John Clarke‘s performance of The Hide And Seeky Bird.

Naturally, as a quirky project we’re going to feel the vibe of the comedian’s delivery and tone. It pops us along jovially as we watch the rather fun YouTube video, a still from which is the graphic for the release as well as for this review. The art for the video was created by Fane Flaws, who passed away in 2001, and was produced by KARACTAZ Ltd. Animation director Dylan Coburn.

The visuals are a great pastel 2D cartoon, with the bird in question and his cohorts cavorting long to Mr. Clarke, with his trademark dry, wry booming voice. The tune is backed with brass and a fun little oompah tone that, along with the choral chorus, puts one in mind of some of Monty Python‘s more entertaining offerings.

If you were a fan of this as a child, be happy. As of 1st November it’s on digital platforms everywhere, so get among it and relive the innocent years.

  1. Lovely review! A small correction – Fane passed away in 2021 not 2001! Cheers, PD
